Dogs and cats age faster than humans. Large breed dogs age faster than small breed dogs. Changes in your health may occur over years. Changes in your pet’s health can occur over months. We recommend "Wellness Exams" every 6 months to check for any changes and monitor the medications that some animals are on.
You should also monitor and watch for any changes in your pet’s health. Is your pet drinking more, urinating more, eating normally but losing or gaining weight? Does your pet’s ears have a bad odor, or look infected? Is your pet scratching or licking excessively? Have you noticed any growths or lumps or sores on your pet? If so, see the vet as soon as possible.
Keeping your pet’s teeth clean will add years to your pet’s life. Regular Dental exams are part of our Wellness recommendations. Daily brushing will reduce plaque development. If not daily, then try to brush at least every 2 to 3 days. There is no substitute for brushing your pet's teeth. Between brushing ,or if you can’t brush, there are products available to add to your pet's drinking water that will help remove plaque. Knuckle bones and hard chews for your dog also help,
Give your pet fish oil daily. One fish oil capsule should be given for every 10 to 15 lbs of weight (½ capsule for under 10 lbs). Fish oil will boost the immune system and slow the ageing process. For pet’s that shed, fish oil can reduce shedding up to 50%. It will also help control 40% to 60% of allergies in dogs and cats. Excessive licking and scratching or infected ears can be allergy related. Some pet foods contain fish oil, but do not adequately provide a therapeutic level. Capsules are still needed to maintain the levels that your animal will benefit from.
Parasite prevention is an important part of our Wellness recommendations. All pets are encouraged strongly to be on a heartworm preventative year round. Stool samples should be checked every 6 months and are part of our Wellness exams. Fleas and Ticks can be a problem year round if preventive measures are not taken. We will recommend the best products for your home environment and lifestyle.
